About Us
-AGAINST THE ROPES- or CONTRA LAS CUERDAS MEZCAL is a project that seeks to give mezcal a new value, one that prioritizes quality over quantity. Our mezcal truly is mezcal. We have a unique added value: the land, where what is scarce elsewhere is abundant. Being mostly wild, our agave grows in the hills and ravines within the former Hacienda Guegorene, in the state of Oaxaca.
Our palenque, designed for artisanal production, receives our plants and transforms them into the coveted liquid, each agave variety that brings our brand to life is authentic. We do not use sugar to increase production, which is why our batches are limited. Our wild agave grows for up to 30 years before undergoing ancestral distillation, and our Espadín agave fields dress the landscape of the family hacienda with thousands of plants that ensure production for many years to come.

Our Story
The Ex-Hacienda Guegorene is located in the Municipality of San Pedro Taviche, which belongs to the Ocotlán de Morelos district, within the Central Valleys region of Oaxaca. It is part of the area that produces both wild and cultivated agave, with an estimated productive potential of approximately one thousand hectares. The Ex-Hacienda Guegorene was acquired at the end of the 1800s for timber exploitation, intended to supply the furnaces of the gold and silver mines in the region. However, after the Revolution, mining operations ceased. As a result, our great-grandmother began producing mezcal, which she sold in clay jars. Due to the prohibition in the 1920s and 1930s, commercialization became increasingly difficult, eventually forcing the activity to stop.
Approximately 25 years ago, we revived the tradition of producing the finest mezcal in Mexico. -AGAINST THE ROPES- or CONTRA LAS CUERDAS MEZCAL.
